Instructional Combos #1 - Fall 2007


This combination was created for students (likely in fall 2007) to teach new movements to some of my very first groups of students.  It was created under the time I was using Ikiwiki as my dance name.  It was also prior to the standardized format now used with The Bellydance Dictionary.  I’m adding it to the blog for historical purposes and possible reintegration.


Start with weight centered and body facing audience.

Rib Circles and Lifts
1-2:      Rib circle (right-front-left-center) with arms at shoulder level and rounded to front.
3-4:      Repeat rib circle (right-front-left-center) while turning 1/8 turn left (face left front corner)
5-8:      Rib lifts right, left, right, left.

Arm Raise and Traveling Hip Bumps
1-4:      Raise arms to overhead (maintain facing front corner).
5-6:      Step forward on right leg with a right side hip bump and flick wrists to the right.  Then step forward on left leg with a left side hip bump and flick wrists to the left.
7-8:      Step forward on right leg with a right side hip bump and flick wrists to the right.  Then step forward on left leg with a left side hip bump and flick wrists to the left.

1-2:      Step back on right leg with a right side hip bump and flick wrists to the right.  Then back on left leg with a left side hip bump and flick wrists to the left.
3-4:      Step back on right leg with a right side hip bump and flick wrists to the right.  Then back on left leg with a left side hip bump and flick wrists to the left.

Traveling Hip Bumps and Arm Lower
5-6:      Turn ¼ turn to face right front corner while stepping forward on right leg with a right side hip bump and flick wrists to the right.  Then forward on left leg with a left side hip bump and flick wrists to the left
7-8:      Step forward on right leg with a right side hip bump and flick wrists to the right.  Then step forward on left leg with a left side hip bump and flick wrists to the left.

1-2:      Step back on right leg with a right side hip bump and flick wrists to the right.  Then back on left leg with a left side hip bump and flick wrists to the left.
3-4:      Step back on right leg with a right side hip bump and flick wrists to the right.  Then back on left leg with a left side hip bump and flick wrists to the left.
5-8:      Lower arms and place hands on hips.

Pelvic Drops and Vertical Figure 8 (scoops)
1-4:      Drop pelvic four times.
5-8:      Vertical figure 8 (starting right) while turning 1/8 turn left (face front, center).
5:   Scoop right hip down, out, up.  Push hips through the center of your body.
6:   While turning 1/8 turn left, scoop left hip down, out, up.  Push hips through the center of your body.
7:   Scoop right hip down, out, up.  Push hips through the center of your body.
8:  Scoop left hip down, out, up.  Push hips to center.
